Sterling Airways was formed in Denmark 1962 by Ejlif Krogager, the self-styled founder of the Tjaerborg travel agency as a charter airline to service his own package tours from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean. Already a part of the jet-age in 1965 operating the Caravelle, Ejlif wanted to offer exciting destinations to far off places, whilst offering great comfort and service for a fair price. It was 1973 and the 727 advanced was just what Sterling needed and Eilif ordered three of them. The 727's flew their main routes to Southern Europe, but also to San Francisco, Miami and Toronto as well from Copenhagen offering great value tours to his expanding business. In 1993 the company went bankrupt, however it went on to form Sterling European airways in 1994, operating three 727's including OY-SBI before the airline was purchased by Fred Olsen in 1996.
