Trieste is an Italian town of 199.508 inhabitants, capital of the Italian region with special statute Friuli-Venezia Giulia, overlooking the gulf of the same name in the northernmost part of the Upper Adriatic, between the Italian peninsula and Istria, a few kilometers from the border with Slovenia in the historic region of Venice Giulia.
Formerly the capital of the province of the same name, for centuries it has represented a bridge between Western and Central-Southern Europe, mixing Mediterranean, Central European and Slavic characters and is the most populous and densely populated municipality in the region, with the port of Trieste which in 2016 was it was the Italian port with the most freight traffic and one of the most important in southern Europe.
The commercial and industrial activities of the city are still linked, albeit to a lesser extent than in the past, to the port. Despite the negative impact of the latter on the economic and employment level, the Trieste population enjoys a high standard of living (in 2008 the Province of Trieste was second in Italy after that of Milan and high levels of income.
Some of the major insurance companies were founded in Trieste starting from the Habsburg period: Assicurazioni Generali (1831), SASA Assicurazioni (1923 - later incorporated into the UnipolSai group), Lloyd Adriatico (1936) and Riunione Adriatica di Sicurtà (RAS) ( 1838). The last two are now incorporated into the German group Allianz. The general management of Assicurazioni Generali and that of the online telephone insurance company Genertel are still based in Trieste, as are Allianz S.p.A., which has its legal and operational headquarters in the city.
