Cergy is a commune in the French department of Val-d'Oise, in northwestern suburbs of Paris. It is located 27.8 km (17.3 mi) from the centre of Paris, in the "new town" of Cergy-Pontoise, created in the 1960s, of which it is the central and most populated commune.
Due to its past as a rural village, Cergy still has an old village and three hamlets : Ménandon and Gency downstream, and Ham on the left bank of the Oise, near Neuville.
The new districts, sheltering the vast majority of the inhabitants, do not form a homogeneous urbanized zone either, and urban continuity has been established with several neighboring municipalities, development not having taken into account the limits of the municipalities.
This pack does NOT contain a full photogrammetry extract of the city in order to keep acceptable size and performances for lower configurations. It contains the following mods:
-Tour du Belvedere: this building is the starting point of the Axe Majeur, a monumental work designed by Israeli sculptor Dani Karavan in the 1980es. At its summit, the Tour du Belverdere offers the only point of view over the whole of the work, and allows a 360 ° view of a large part of the new town and its surroundings.
The tower is designed inclined 1.5 ° in the direction of the Oise, which evokes the Tower of Pisa , but it also refers to the astronomical observatories as well as to the Medici column in Paris. It takes place in the middle of the Place Hubert-Renaud, known as the Place des Columns (although those of the buildings are fictitious), which is almost entirely surrounded by neoclassical buildings designed by Ricardo Bofill.
The erection of the tower constitutes the founding act of the major Axis and makes the project “irreversible” . Acted by a meeting at the Ministry of Culture on January 3, 1985, construction began in July, and the monument was inaugurated by Jack Lang on January 14, 1986.
-Pyramide de l'Axe Majeur: 20 meters sideways and 10 meters high, contemporary with the Astronomical Island, the Pyramid is not located on the Axis but on the side, at the level of the island. It is thus a symbol of a shift in point of view, and brings a traditional and powerful form , classic in the work of Dani Karavan. It is hollow and open, its interior being accessible from a boat. It is actually a stack of 177 white concrete elements, forming a sort of staircase on the sides of the sculpture.
-Gare de Cergy-Saint Christophe: The Cergy-Saint-Christophe station was put in service on September 29, 1985 by the French National Railway Company (SNCF) as it opened to operate the first extension of the line of the bifurcation from Neuville to Cergy -Prefecture. The station building is the largest clock in Europe . It is the work of architects Martine and Philippe Deslandes and the clock mechanism was provided by the Huchez company.
-Square de l'Echiquier: Montes and Maurios, the two architects who designed this square in 1984 took the exact figures of the dimensions of Piazza Navona in Rome. Montes draws his references both from fortified medieval towns and classical architecture. However due to the simplicity of its forms and the absence of ornamental details, the building keeps a certain austerity.
