Lone Pine Airport (026), Death Valley California.
Welcome to my latest reworking of a Death Valley Airport. OK, technically Lone Pine and the airport is situated just outside the national Park in Owens Valley. BUT….
I’ve chosen this airport as its a perfect base to explore the Death Valley area and of course Mt Whitney which the airport is very close to. In a few hours it is possible to explore the highest and lowest points of the US! Naturally, as always the scenery is breathtaking.
The airport originally was used as an air force training base in WW2 and now fits firmly in the GA camp and is very popular with gliders. The buildings and the runway aren't in the best shape and I’ve tried to recreate the feel of Lone Pine. For those of you who know the site then hopefully you will agree my scenery feels authentic.
The default scenery contains nothing other than a plain apron. This airport turned out to be my biggest project to date.
What I’ve done:-
- Added over 30 handcrafted objects and buildings, majority with PBR. 2K on larger textures.
- Removed wrong taxi signs etc
- Removed runway no longer used.
- Reworked apron, taxiway and runway textures to match the current condition.
- Dirt strip now stands out a little more.
- Accurate runway markings and taxi signs
- Added the heliport
- Got rid the horrid road textures near the airport
- Tweaked the night lighting (enough to make sunset/sunrise flights possible - Taxi and apron not lit)
- Default airport services gone.
- Corrected communications
- Lots of hand placed vegetation, the road now has the tall pines seen in google street view!!
- Added the trailer park and industrial units next to the site (pointless as most of you wont see it, but without the detailing of the area surrounding the airport it did not look like it does in the photos)
- Speaking of which the photos show a mass of power and communications cables all over the place so I’ve added these too which I think helps with the immersion.
- Please don’t be offended by the ‘adopt a highway’ sign...seemed only right.
This has been designed to use with my other sceneries, please see here:-
Furnace Creek Airport L06 - America's lowest and hottest airport! Death Valley!
Stovepipe Wells airport - L09- Death Valley National Park
The Chicken Strip - Death Valley's National Parks unofficial airstrip!
I also reccomend DennyAtkin rework of Darwin!
Darwin Airstrip, near Death Valley National Park
Not always essential but in this scenery I strongly recommend you use the following libraries as the objects just help bring the airport together and give it a little pop, (when will we have one universal library!):-
Dave's Higher-Res Crooked Library
Credit to the authors hard work.
30 plus hours of my life I wont get back has gone to this scenery and I want it to be the best it can be so please let me know if you spot an errors of flaws.
Please also consider donating if you like this scenery or any of my others works as any funds will help me purchase more interesting and higher res textures.
Install in the normal way. Bonus - its in a normal zip file for ease of installation.
Thank you and all the best!
Karl.

Easily one of the most "real" GA airports you can experience. Landing this with the google map replacement running is mind-boggling. Nicely done!!!

Very cool little airport! The small details shows that this must have been a labor of love. Thank you and keep up the great work!

I only just came across this airport after seeing someone’s screenshot here. Very nice work. I hope you don’t mind me pointing out that the Airport is registered as O26 not 026 (Oh rather than zero), very hard to see the difference. I have checked on three charts including skyvector. As far as I can see, no US airports are registered with numerals only, they always include a letter. It’s funny, you have had this up since last year and no one has noticed

Wow! This is really amazing. I am really sorry I never rated this before as its one of my favorites in the sim currently. Keep it up the good work!
I never realized how much fun it is flying into death valley.

Nice, thank you.

It is definetely my favourite airfield in the Sim. Especially with the Cerro Gordo Ghost Town nearby and the beautiful landscape.
Great work on the addon!

Perfectly captures the ambience of a typical middle-of-nowhere desert airport. Lots of details invite you to explore the property. There is even the proverbial rusty old school bus in the storage lot. Kudos to the author! I had no performance issues with the mod.

Great work and detail! She was a blast to fly into.
One gripe, is I had a massive performance hit right before touch down. Choppy FPS that got worse the closer I got to the apron. Might be a SU6 issue? Other than that, this is great.

Superb work. Thank you! Hoping you'll add Panamint Springs and Tunnel Meadows to your incredible Death Valley pack!

Does it work with SU5?

I love the little hidden gems for other developers in there.
This is great scenery.
Payware quality in many respects.
Love it. As soon as I am able to give 5 stars I will but it keeps telling me to wait.

This, sir, is a work of art. It´s been almost five years since I drove by the airport but I still remember how it looked. You really nailed the small details, the signs, the graffiti on the hangar, it´s all there. Congratulations and I´m looking forward to exploring the Alabama hills and Death Valley from this great little airport as soon as I get the time!

Great work! Thank you 😊
