In February and March 1814, the Emperor Napoleon defended the French territories against the whole of allied Europe. Despite the sometimes brilliant victories of the imperial army, the Allies eventually arrived in front of Paris, while Napoleon wanted to stop them at Saint-Dizier. After his military defeat, the marshals forced the emperor to abdicate, and he was deposed by the Senate on April 3. Napoleon's intention was to give up the imperial crown to his son Napoleon II, but the allied powers demanded an unconditional abdication, signed on April 6, 1814. On April 20, the "Farewells of Fontainebleau" took place. Napoleon embarked at Saint-Raphaël and, arriving at Portoferraio on May 3, disembarked there on May 4. That same day, Louis XVIII entered Paris.
The clauses of the treaty of Fontainebleau were not respected, the annuity was not paid; Napoleon learned moreover that at the congress of Vienna it was question of exiling him to the Azores or to the island of Saint Helena. On the other hand, Cipriani, one of his relatives, sent to Austria at the end of 1814, informed him of the betrayal and infidelity of his wife Marie-Louise, and he embarked on February 26, 1815 on board the Inconstant. On March 1, less than a year after his departure in exile, he disembarked at Golfe Juan, near Antibes, with six other ships and 1.100 men.On March 1, 1815, the disembarkation, planned at Saint-Raphaël, was done at Vallauris. It was in broad daylight, in full view of everyone, that the operation took place, in front of the surprised customs officers. A first bivouac was set up on the shore of what was now Golfe-Juan.
The Twilight of the Empire that is the Hundred Days opens on an unheard of prologue: The invasion of a country by a single man, as François-René de Chateaubriand will write with the genius of the right formula that we know him. Historians and poets will consecrate the expression The Flight of the Eagle, a condensed version of the sentence that the Emperor pronounced in person when he landed at Golfe-Juan.
