Located in the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait, Perim Island, also known as Mayun Island, is the site of a mysterious, incomplete airfield that has been under construction, in various configuartions, since at least 2016. Originally, construction began on a 3000 m (10,000 ft) runway, oriented 10-28, thought to be funded by Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates as part of their intervention in the Yemeni civil war, which began in 2014. This project was abandoned by around 2017, but the partially-cleared outline of this runway remains visible at the site. In 2021 a new 1800 m (6000 ft) runway, oriented roughly 09-27, was constructed. The existing ramp areas were also improved and 3 hangars were constructed. Although ownership of this latest airfield has not been conclusively established, it is widely thought to be a project of the UAE. The remains of an even older runway, oriented approximately 13-31, are also faintly visible at the site, but information on the origins of this runway is even scarcer than the other two.
This scenery utilizes only default MSFS assets. I may update it from time to time if new satellite imagery reveals additional construction at the site. The assigned ICAO designation, OYPI, is fictitious.
Note: if you have the "We Love VFR - Region 1" addon also installed, there will be a couple of construction cranes located adjacent to the airport. Those are part of the We Love VFR scenery and not this one.
