North American P-51D History with the RCAF
After WWII in 1947, 150 P-51D Mustangs were sold from U.S. surplus to Canada for $10,000 each, and distributed among the established Auxiliary Squadrons of Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, and British Columbia. The RCAF received its first 32 aircraft during June 1947, and by 1951 the U.S. had delivered the balance.
The Mustangs were re-designated to F-51D Tactical Fighter Mark IV's and sent to the following RCAF Squadrons and Divisions:
No. 402 "City of Winnipeg" Squadron, coded AC
No. 403 "Calgary" Squadron, coded PR, (recoded AD in 1954)
No. 417 Squadron, Central Air Command Composite Flight, coded CB
No. 420 "City of London" Squadron, coded AW, (recoded QJ c1955)
No. 424 "City of Hamilton" Squadron, coded BA, (recoded PV in 1954)
No. 442 "City of Vancouver" Squadron, coded BU (recoded MH in 1954)
No. 443 "Sea Island" Squadron, coded GY (recoded PF in 1954).
Central Flying School (CFS), coded DD
Air Armament School (AAS), coded BZ
No. 1 Flying Training School (FTS), coded GM
Central Experiment & Proving Establishment (CEPE), coded FB
Canadian Joint Air Training Center (CJATC), coded OU and AT
Some Mustangs were also attached to various RCAF Stations throughout the country, i.e. never apparently attached to any regular Auxiliary unit. These F-51Ds would wear different markings and squadron codes over the course of their service.
The markings for the Mustangs were described as follows:
All-natural aluminum finish with red outer wing surfaces, upper and lower, red stabilizers, and black anti-glare panel ahead of the cockpit. In practice however, the red recognition markings ( to facilitate spotting of a downed aircraft in snow-covered areas), do not appear to have been applied to more than a few aircraft. Individual unit markings gradually appeared on many Mustangs during the mid 1950's, but all RCAF Mustangs retained their natural aluminum finish.
In 1956, the RCAF started to phase out the Mustangs in favor of the new Sabre and Vampire jets. The last Mustang "GY-O" Serial no. 9600 of 443 Squadron, New Westminster, BC., was struck off strength on Nov. 1, 1960.
The Mustangs were gathered, and trucked to a former BCATP field in Carberry, Manitoba, and stored as APDAL (Aircraft Pending Disposal at Location).
Thirty-nine aircraft were lost during service, and many of the survivors were cannibalized to refit the best air frames for sale in the years following their official retirement.
There are a number of former RCAF Mustangs in private hands still flying today. Here are a few -
-Serial No. 44-73463, former RCAF 9575, flying as CF-VPM "Y2-C" at Vintage Wings of Canada, Gatineau, Quebec.

I would like to acknowledge and give thanks to the following sites for being diligent in their research, and sharing the most accurate historical information regarding the P-51D Mustangs of the RCAF. They have been absolutely essential sources to me over years of RCAF repaints, and especially for this MSFS project.

I would also like to send a very special thank you to Jerry Vernon, President of the Vancouver Chapter of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society, for sending a few of his unpublished photos of 442 and 443 Squadron mustangs for reference. I appreciate him sharing his personal insight as a former RCAF airman at Sea Island BC. Mr Vernon is a leading expert and consultant today with records on over 130 RCAF Mustangs in his life-long research files. Thank you sir !
Thank you August Horvath for the connection.
Please like, leave a comment, share a screenshot! I put a lot of work into my liveries, a little appreciation goes a long way. Thank you!
Enjoy!

Thanks for doing this! However, the real one looks a bit more shiny:

Thanks FredericLord, you're most welcome. You are referring to the Hannu Halminen's recently restored F-51D marked in the 424 Sqdn colors BA-S, which is very shiny.

This repaint of the original look from the 1950's. This Mustang depicts ex-USAAF P-51D serial number 44-74582. It was sold directly to Canada, and placed at Hamilton.
Hannu's Mustang is a USAAF surplus /Swedish airforce-purchased Mustang, serial 44-72059.
