A little bit of history…
First original achievement of the Canadian branch of de Havilland, the Chipmunk prototype made its first flight on May 22nd 1946 at Downview. This type succeeded the famous Tiger Moth training biplane. With 218 units (teardrop canopy) built in Canada, 1000 in England and 60 built under license by OGMA in Portugal (straight 3-post canopy), the Chipmunk was assigned to basic training with the R.A.F., the Royal Canadian Air Force as well as the air forces of some 15 other countries. The Sasin SA-29 Spraymaster was an Australian conversion for crop dusting: the Super Chipmunk, converted from a production machine with a 260 hp Lycoming GO-435, modified control surfaces and modified control surfaces and retractable landing gear, was an aerobatic aircraft built in one single in the U.S.A., where it participated in the 1970 championships.
