his folder contains a repaint for the Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat by Flying Iron. It shows Grumman F6F-3 white 17, the assigned aircraft of Lt Richard Stambook of VF-27, based on the USS Princeton on 24 October 1944. He had flown Dauntlesses and Wildcats before coming to VF-27. He finished the war with 11 confirmed kills. The cat mouth markings on VF-27 aircraft were designed by pilots Carl Brown, Richard Stambook and Robert Burnell during their training at Kahului Naval Air Station in Maui, Hawaii during March and April 1944. While all of them had contributed to draw these mouth paintings, Burnell had done most of the work. Around 24 F6F Hellcats were marked when the squadron embarked aboard the USS Princeton on May 29th, 1944. However, only nine F6F Hellcats with the Cat's Mouth had survived from the attack on the USS Princeton because they were airborne. These nine F6F Hellcats landed on other carriers after the sinking of the USS Princeton and the commanders of those carriers were not amused by the non-standard paintwork it seems. Repaint by JanKees.
