RCAF Dakota:
Between 1935 and 1947, 10,368 Dakota family aircraft were produced in the United States. Throughout the aircraft's life, it was know as the C-41 / 47 / 117, CC-129 /R4D, Dak, Dakota, Gooney Bird, Skytrain, and Skytrooper. The first RCAF examples were purchased in 1943, and were used by the RCAF during WWII. In post war years, the Dakotas were passed over to Trans Canada Airlines, but still continued to serve the RCAF in roles of aerial transport, Search and Rescue, Navigation and Radar training, and as target tug. A total of 169 Dakota served with the postwar RCAF at Auxilliary bases throughout the country. The last serving Dakota in the RCAF was struck off March 14, 1989, in Comox, BC.
This Package:
This livery depicts Douglas CC-129 Dakota registration No.10912 as it appeared at CAF Trenton ( CYTR ) Ontario, Canada, and as it looked on January 25, 1970. Rare are photos of this " New-Leaf" era Dakota with French lettering on the starboard upper fuselage. I have only found two. Later, 912 became C-FBKV flying passengers for Atlantic Central Airlines in November 1973, then Ontario Central Airlines until 1976.
Just to Note :
Incorporated in this livery is a method of measurement I used to determine scale. A 24" roundel is 24" on this model, and so the lettering and markings are all very accurate in size and positions, this information I got from a RCAF Markings manual. Invaluable stuff for a repainter.
Texture sheets are 2048 x 2048 to keep the file size low as possible, as no compression is used. If you wish to compress the textures to use on a less powerful computer, BC7 is the most efficient algorhythm. I just personally didn't like the "softened" look, so I opted not to compress, rather to keep the texture sheet 2k to maintain reasonable sharpness. You may alter my texture files to suit your processor, but I kindly ask that you not redistribute my package as your own altered version. I have no intentions of releasing a " lighter" version and will not be accepting requests, thanks.
Thank you for your interest in my artwork, I distribute it as freeware, and it shall remain so. I hope you enjoy!
Thank you Aeroplane Heaven/ Microsoft for the amazing Douglas DC-3 model.
Thank you to August Horvath for the valuable information which made this livery possible.
