-The Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux is a castle in the commune of Prudhomat, Lot département, France. One of the most impressive in the Quercy region, it has been listed as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture since 1862.
Construction began about 1100, under Hugues, baron of Castelnau, who built a wall around his manor. He was the ancestor of the powerful dynasty of Castelnau, who owned a rich and prosperous region and were vassals of the Counts of Toulouse. The castle was enlarged several times between the 12th and the 15th century, when it was necessary to adapt the fortifications to artillery. It was taken by Henry II of England in 1159, and returned to the barons of Castelnau at the end of the Hundred Years' War.
During the 17th century, the castle was improved in an aesthetical and practical way: large windows, richly decorated salons, balcony of honor. The castle fall into disrepair after the death of the last Castelnau in 1715. In 1895 it was bought by Jean Mouliérat, a singer with the Paris Opéra Comique and also a collector of furniture and sacred artworks. He undertook the restoration and furnished the castle with his collection. After his death in 1932, the castle was given to the state. Visitors can see seven rooms in this fortress, restored and furnished in the medieval style.
The castle of Castelnau-Brenenoux is located on the top of a hill, at the intersection of several valleys; among them is the Dordogne River. The castle is visible from a distance and easily recognizable by its walls of red stone. The layout is nearly a triangle, with round towers at each angle. The square keep and the main building of the medieval period still remain. Its conception was very imposing, with three enclosing walls, wide curtain walls, and nine round towers.A small village has surrounded the castle, along the slopes of the hill.
-The Tours de Saint-Laurent (or Château de Saint-Laurent-les-Tours) are a ruined castle in the commune of Saint-Laurent-les-Tours in the Lot département of France.
The castle belonged for eight centuries to the Viscounts of Turenne who built the two towers, the only vestiges of the construction, after the sackings of the French Wars of Religion. The remains of the fort become a royal property in 1738. The castle then passed into the ownership of the Noailles family, and was bought by Lafon du Verdier in 1895 who completed construction of the current manor.
The castle was transformed by Jean Lurçat who set up his tapestry studio there in 1945, decorating the walls, ceilings, doors and windows. Numerous works of the artist are preserved here, including tapestries, paintings and ceramics made between 1943 and his death in 1966. The logis and the furniture were donated to the département by his widow.
The castle is now the property of the Lot département. It is open to the public six months a year. It has been listed since 1889 as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture.
-The village of Carennac is a major touristic landmark of the area. It is well known for its church tympanum dating back from the 12th century. The Château des Doyens de Carennac was built by Alain de Ferrières (1529-1554)
The decoration of the ceiling of the large living room was executed at the request of François Salignac de la Mothe-Fénelon, bishop of Sarlat, Doyen de Carennac from 1630 to 1681. He is represented in the portrait painted on the mantelpiece.
The castle has been registered as a historical monument in 1929. The facades and roofs with the gallery surmounting the north aisle of the church, the fortified gate to the west, the old fortified wall with its corner tower to the east and the painted ceiling of the large living room were classified in 1938.
The mod also features the nearby Pont de Carennac. This suspended bridge was built in 1939.
-The ruins of Taillefer dominate the Dordogne valley near the villages of Gintrac and Carennac and facing the castle of Castelnau Bretenoux.
The exact origins of the "castle" are largely unknown. It is dated from the 13th century and is composed living quarters with chemney and sink but also defensive elements. It was suggested to be a Templar property but this remains uncertain. Most likely, the keep was designed to defend the Port de Sal, a local harbour which was used to route salt from the Dordogne to the area of Gramat.
The absence of structural addition suggests that the building was abandoned relatively fast after its construction.
-The Château d'Estresse (or Estresses )is located in the town of Astaillac in Corrèze, built on the banks of the Dordogne during the 16th and 17th centuries. It underwent major modifications at the beginning of the 20th century. The castle is built on a terrace according to a rectangular plan with a main building between two square towers. The building is supported by an imposing medieval wall 200 meters long and 8 meters high, with its feet in the water. Its flowery park includes two millenary yews
The building has been listed as a historical monument since October 15, 1971 for its facades and roofs.
-The Pont de Mols is a railway bridge over the Dordogne river, built in 1886 located between the train stations of Puybrun and Biars-sur-Cère.
