Welcome to Childs Glacier Airstrip!
This airstrip is an old uncharted airstrip in the Copper River/Lost Coast region of Alaska.
The airstrip is a approx. 1750 feet gravel/grass runway, which co-exists/shares its runway with the now inaccessible Copper River Highway, once linking Cordova to the old mining town of Kennicott in the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.
It's a relatively safe bush strip in absolutely stunning scenery. The Child Glacier ends only close to a 1nm into the Copper River to the west. Together with the Miles Glacier on the other side of Miles Lake, the scenery makes for jawdropping approaches.
Close to the airstrip, you'll find the Million Dollar Bridge (aka. Miles Glacier Bridge) a 1910 finished 4 span steel railroad bridge, which once served the copper transports between Cordova and Kennicott Mill, some 130 miles away. When the copper deposits were deplenished, both the town and the railroad line were left to nature.
The last train passed here 1938. In the 1950s the railroad line was re-opened as highway. In 1964, the bridge was seriously damaged in an earthquake and finally got fully repaired in 2005, however, road access is still not possible, since several other bridges up and downstream have been destroyed by glacial outwash and highwater of the Copper River.
In 2022, the Recreational Aviation Foundation (RAF) in cooperation with the AOPA and the USFS, decided to improve the general condition of the airstrip. I'm not sure if that already has happened yet or not, but I rendered the strip as somewhat maintained and usable again.
If you enjoy my sceneries and use them, consider to give a small donation.
A lot of effort and love go into these and to maintain and further expand the Bush and Backcountry Library.
It doesn't need to be much and with Paypal it only takes 1-2 minutes.
Dependencies:
Bush & Backcountry Library [Required]
Shortest Trees [Recommended]
Compatibility:
Possibly incompatible with vegetation/season mods (I can't check since I don't use those)
Compatible with OrbX Alaska Mesh
I hope you enjoy!
