The future is now!
After creating my first fully electric aircraft in the sim that happened to be based on GotFriends Optica, I decided to retrofit the standard Diamond DA62. Copyright problems aside, in my opinion, this aircraft suits even more for such an overhaul.
Powerplant
Let's swap Austro AE330 engines for 2x 200 kW (268 hp) electric motors, such as Magnax AXF275 (1000 Nm peak torque, 4000 RPM max, 125 lbs dry weight with an invertor and a 2:1 final gear). When throttle is set to zero, the regeneration mode is activated. In this mode the battery is recharged at about 13 kW power, so that helps during the descent and on flinal, acting as an efficient speedbrake. High torque is available even on lowest RPMs and no power degradation with altitude as expected. You can even cruise as low as at 20-25% engine power.
The aircraft is supplied with two high-voltage 800V 500Ah futuristic solid-state batteries (1 kWh/kg), so total capacity reaches 750 kWh. Batteries could be switched on and off with former engine master switches. The batteries add roughly 1650 lbs to the empty weight of the aircraft which is now 4363 lbs. Max takeoff weight has been left unchanged. The engine props were switched to the modern model and tweaked a little.
Flight model
Nothing special except for the empty weight and empty weight MOI, flaps coefficient increased a little.
Performance
Practical ceiling: 40000 feet
Max speed: ~300 KTAS @ 40000 feet on full power (400 kW)
Max range: 800-1283 nm at low altitudes and 70-100 kW
Max endurance: 7-10 hours at low altitudes and 70-100 kW
Normal cruise: 230 KTAS @ 300 kW @ 25000 feet, 520 nm range
Rate of climb: ~1800-2000 feet/min at Vy speed (95 KIAS) on full power
Stall speed: 64 knots
Systems
Vanilla DA62 ECUs were made operable. When ECU switches are activated, the props are governed in "constant blade AoA" mode which performs a lot better than a constant speed mode in climb. The propellers are constantly held at 0.5 degree angle of attack and this results in constant high thrust efficiency. Thus the engine response is made more linear in wider range of power settings and RPMs. At low power settings this mode allows the plane cruise at unusually low RPMs like 1000-1300. The engines at "idle" setting (1%, 4kW) produce near-zero thrust at 500 RPM and make an efficient glider. In climb the ECU conversely lets propellers spin faster than normal with lower pitch, the constraint on blade tips mach number (0.92) is applied when necessary.
Engine displays for G1000 were adjusted for electric engines and systems. De-ice system, air conditioning and pressurization systems are simulated as fully electrical with dynamical electrical loads.
Sounds
Sounds from the electric glider DG1001E were adapted for the airplane.
