Badminton Airfield in South Gloucestershire, EG03
A pretty basic strip, grass runway, a hangar and some bits and bobs. It exists in the default database but has no parking spots, so now it does! Now the Duke and Duchess can start cold and dark and inside a hangar. Badminton House is just off to the east a bit which is where the Duke of Beaufort lives. These fields are part of some house stables I think, and they have some sort of horse trials here every year.
There's a nice long runway, but according to some simple diagram I found online not all of the west end of the runway after the hanger area is used. There's some white markers around which seem to indicate the limits. There's two windsocks, one near the east end is the real life location, I added another near the hangar end it's hard to make out the windsock at the far end from the hangar due to how MSFS renders things. There's a parking spot inside the hangar, I managed to fit the Cessna 207 in there but anything larger will cause problems. There's another parking spot just outside the hangar and another at the eastern end of the runway turnabout spot.
I noticed some weird things when making this strip like some marks on the side of the runway that look suspiciously like VASI lights, and on Google Street View there appears to be some very small approach lights across the road and over the wall from the eastern end of the runway. I did try adding in some approach lights but theyre all too big and are they really approach lights IRL? You can make them out on Google maps aerial imagery as well and they do line up with the runway... God knows. As for the 'VASIs', I found a youtube video of someone landing at the field and IRL whatever was there is long gone now, just some frame left. The video was actually pretty handy for making this field so go check it out maybe: Flying into Badminton - Ben Atkinson
There's also a stray gate by the parking area. As you can see in the video this gate actually does exist. On maps its shown as being part of a bridleway, but there's no fence... Probably something to do with the horsey business.
Anyway enough rambling. I tried to keep the number of libraries low so you'll need:
Emerald Object Library
Bush & Backcountry Library
colinj's library
And not mandatory, only adds a few vehicles about:
Ethnicfs vehicles library
I have a few other airfields in the area so why not go check them out? Also some of my earlier airfields have recommendations for other airfields and mods to try to bring the area more to life.
Anyway that's far too many words for such a basic little strip. Hope you enjoy it!
Oh, one final thing. The folder is named Horton for some reason. I used the SDK replace airfield method and it automatically created the folders. There's a village called Horton nearby so I guess in the internal database this airfield is marked as Horton. I could've renamed the folder but I plain old forgot. Maybe I'll remember if I ever do an update. Think you could just rename it yourself if it bothers you.
