Livery for the Aeroplane Heaven P-51D Mustang.
North American P-51D ‘Ferocious Frankie’ was sent to the 8th Air Force in the last part of the war, serving at Leiston in Suffolk among other stations.
Post war service included the Royal Canadian Air Force, operating from Alberta before starting civilian life in 1957.
In April 1980 the Mustang flew across the Atlantic to join Stephen Grey’s early stable.
Painted as ‘Candyman’/ ‘Moose’, she first displayed in the UK at Biggin Hill in 1981 with Ray Hanna.
She was leased to The Fighter Collection, Duxford from 1986 to 1991.
Old Flying Machine Company acquired the aircraft early in 1999, since when it has carried the highly distinguishing colours of American ace, Wallace E. Hopkins, as ‘Ferocious Frankie’.
‘Ferocious Frankie’ was named by the pilot as he reckoned the aircraft was as ferocious as his wife!
The Mustang has appeared in various movies including ‘Empire of the Sun’, ‘Hart’s War’, ‘Memphis Belle’, ‘Saving Private Ryan’ and ‘Fury’.
In 2017 she was sold to MSO Air & Space Museum, Sivrihisar Air Park, Eskisehir Turkey and was delivered early 2018.
