Richard I Bong Memorial Airport, also known as Superior on Air, has two runways, 4-22 and 14-32 with edge lighting. It has a White/Green Beacon, which is now ncluded in the current model. (Very basic)
It is very close to Duluth International (KDLH) and Sky Harbor (KDYT) both of which I have modelled and can be downloaded from flightsim.to, published under the name mnscenerydesign.
The airport is home to the Commemorative Air Force Lake Superior Squadron, and I believe they used to operate out of the CAF Hangar at Duluth, but that was sadly wrecked in a storm a few years back. It was sad for me too, as I had spent a long time modelling the building, only to have to remove it for authenticity.
EAA 272 also have a base here, and I have modelled the mounted aircraft outside their hangar.
On top of one of the hangars, you will find the Wind Tee, which will automatically be set to indicate which runway to use to get the best wind. Note however, that MSFS will probably disagree, but this is an untowered field, so hey! It does not swing in the wind, but uses an arc of wind direction for each runway, and chooses accordingly. It is lit, but due to the weakness of MSFS, it cannot be clearly seen from even pattern altitude at night.
This is a work in progress hence the designation 0.2. Anyone with current knowledge of the airport that can provide me with photographs and details such as whether the taxiway edge lights I have placed are roughly in the right place.
I would like to model the inside of the CAF Hangar, for which I will need photos, preferably towards each wall from the center.
What aircraft/vehicles are in there etc.
Constructive Criticism is welcome.
Release 0.2
- I'm sure that if you fly to this airport, there are key landmarks that you observe. Asobo's AI Generation of buildings was way off the mark with this one, and being based on at least 10 year old satellite images in some places, meant that buildings were missing, but a later update of the images resulted in 2D images with no model.
This version has introduced modelling of the:
- Racetrack Stands
- Fairground Buildings
- Rodeo Area
- Housing to the left of runway 32
- Flashing Beacon on top of the CAF Hangar. (Too small a light I know, but this is a weakness with MSFS)
I plan to position power poles and lighting on the fairground, perhaps with random illumination if it will let me.
As mentioned before, feedback is gratefully received. Are the signs on the runways accurate? Is the night lighting of the runways accurate? Is the taxiway between the runways labeled A as I have modelled it?
Release 0.3
My flashing beacon was much to small, and I have now found a way of increasing the size. It is not possible to turn it off, which is the next weakness to work out. I failed to mention the Superior Water Tower which was added in the last revision, but I have now added a red beacon to the top, again on 24/7, which should help with night flying accuracy. Finally, I have added animated doors to the Skydiving Hangar. These open during the day and shut at night, OR if rainfall/precipitation exceeds 5mm/Hour. You can also force them closed during the day by hiding the 2nd Yoke.
I have no idea what is in this hangar, or what it looks like, so hopefully one day someone will post some photos.
Release 0.4
All the grass has been changed and recolored so that it no longer stands out so much. In checking this, I also found that many of the lights in the fair ground are on during the day. I don't have time to fix this right now, so release 0.5 will include this correction.
Installation
Unzip the download and drag the top level folder, mgc-ksuw-ribongairport to your community folder. You may wish to delete the current version with the same name from the Community Folder, which will save you answering the overwrite question.
Add-On
CAF are working on a PBY-5-6A (Catalina to we British) in the hangar, and have a damaged beyond repair painted black on the corner of the apron nearest the road. If you download and install the amazing model from http://frenchvfr.free.fr/ this aircraft will appear, AND you can fly the aircraft as seen in the linked video. (I didn't fly it in the video .. too embarassing.
