Inaccessible Maiao

Inaccessible Maiao
Maiao is a small island of only 9 km² located 50 nm west of Moorea and 60 nm of Tahiti (French Polynesia). A small 154m mount overlooks the island and its two large brackish water ponds. These very shallow waters take on a emerald greenish hue which contrasts with the turquoise coral reef lagoon that surrounds the island.
Administratively, Maiao is part of the municipality of Moorea and has less than 400 inhabitants. Connections with Moorea are by boat as there is no airport. In case of any emergency, medical evacuations can be carried out by helicopter. In MSFS, a helipad (ICAO fictional code: H001) has therefore been added to the south of the village to give you the opportunity to land.
Maiao is not very favorable to welcoming tourists or any other non-residents of the island, because of an old story of land dispossession by an English trader established on the island in 1920. As a result, the island is most easily visited only by air. Maiao is often overflown by planes from Tahiti's flying clubs. It is indeed an interesting way to discover the island but also for navigation exercises during the training of student pilots.
For the record, the only plane that landed at Maiao was a Piper PA28-140 Cherokee in the 1980s. The F-OCPR, with engine failure during the flight over Maiao, decided to proceed to an emergency landing. In the absence of a runway, the pilot landed on the white sand beach! The incident had a
happy ending because the single-engine aircraft landed without damage. After intervention by mechanics dispatched from Tahiti, the Piper even took off from the makeshift runway!
