Western Norway
Norway… the land of fjords, glaciers, jagged peaks, and beautiful terrain, Norway is a highly mountainous country. Located in northwestern Europe, Norway is a large, mostly coastal country with a rugged topography.
Western Norway is the region along the Atlantic coast of southern Norway. It consists of the counties Rogaland, Vestland, and Møre og Romsdal. The entire region has a population of approximately 1.4 million people, and is known for its amazing landscapes, cascading waterfalls and stunningly deep fjords. It is truly a nature-lover’s paradise.
The West Norwegian Fjords are considered to be some of the most dramatic and spectacular landscapes in the world, with some of the longest, deepest, narrowest and most beautiful fjords. The landscape in this area has been shaped by water and ice over thousands of years. Water continues to cut through the landscape. Alluvial fans, river courses, avalanches and rockslides are all signs that the area continues to be shaped by the forces of nature – this is a place of active geological processes!
This part of Western Norway has four legs:
- In the seventh leg we will discover the Romsdal Peninsula, a 1,560-square-kilometre peninsula that is connected to the mainland by a 5-kilometre wide isthmus, and which is flanked by a large number of fjords. About 42,000 people live on the peninsula, with another 5,000 on the adjacent islands.
- In the eighth leg we will discover the beautiful Sunnmøre Alps, a particularly rugged and wild area of mountains, with narrow valleys, waterfalls and glaciers. Geirangerfjord, the most beautiful fjord in the world and one of only two Norwegian fjords as a World Heritage Site. Tafjordfjella, the Tafjord Mountain Range, a mountain range located in the fare west of the Reinheimen National Park, one Norway's largest wilderness area and one of the most remote. And the Romsdal Alps, where Scandinavian rock climbing started and which have some of the world's most difficult climbs.
- In the ninth leg we will discover the innermost part of the Sognefjord, Norway’s longest and deepest fjord. This area is considered to be one of the most beautiful destinations in the world, and according to UNESCO, the landscape around the fjord arm Nærøyfjorden is “among the most scenically outstanding anywhere”. Which is why it has a place on the World Heritage List.
- Mountains, fjords, waterfalls and glaciers. In the tenth leg we will discover the Odda region, a spectacular region located at the end of the majestic Hardangerfjord. This region has beautiful mountain villages perched on steep cliffs, extensive glaciers, lush valleys and spectacular viewpoints, such as Trolltunga, a gigantic tongue-shaped outcropping that is 700 meters above Lake Ringedalsvatnet.
You will fly with the Beechcraft Baron G58 and have the weather window active so you can experience all the routes at different times and seasons. At the beginning of each leg, the plane is parked and in a Cold & Dark situation. If you want to start the plane quickly, just press the "CTRL + E" keys and activate the lights. You also have a flight plan available with all legs (Norway 3.pln). I hope you enjoy it!
