Sarlat is a medieval town that developed around a large Benedictine abbey of Carolingian origin. The medieval Sarlat Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Sacerdos. This abbey appears in records as early as 1081 and was one of the few in the region that was not raided by the Vikings. The name for the abbey church was Saint Sacerdos by 1318; in the 20th century, it would become a cathedral under Pope John XXIII.
Because modern history has largely passed it by, Sarlat has remained preserved and one of the towns most representative of 14th century France. Its historic centre, with 77 protected monuments, was added to France's Tentative List for future nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2002. The excellent state of preservation owed a debt to writer, resistance fighter and politician André Malraux, who, as Minister of Culture (1960–1969), restored the town and many other sites of historic significance throughout France. The centre of the old town consists of impeccably restored stone buildings and is largely car-free.
The town and region have featured in two major Hollywood films: Ridley Scott's The Duellists (1978) based on Joseph Conrad's Napoleonic tale; and more recently Timeline (2003) adapted from Michael Crichton's time-travel novel, set in 14th century France.
This pack contains the following mods:
-Cathédrale Saint-Sacerdos: The diocese of Sarlat was created in 1317, at the same time as several other Catholic dioceses of the Aquitaine region, following the victory of the French royal forces over the Albigensian Cathar armies. Former archpriest of Sarlat and bishop of Fréjus and Avignon, Pope John XXII appointed the abbot of the Benedictine abbey Saint-Sacerdos as the new bishop of the city. This is how the former Romanesque abbey church became the cathedral of the diocese. Although reusing certain Romanesque parts of the old abbey, the general style of the cathedral is Gothic of Nordic inspiration (presence of two collateral vessels). The Romanesque bell tower dating from the 12th century is the oldest part of the building. The cathedral comes with its own POI.
-Viaduc du Pontet: The viaduct of Sarlat is 186m long and is part of the railway between Siorac and Cazoulès
-Château de Paluel: in the middle of the 15th century , a bastard of the family of Gimel inherited the lordship of Paluel. He and his descendants are responsible for the construction of the castle. In 1600, the castle passed to the Durfort family. It was bought later in 1701 by Antoine d'Aymeric when the castle had been abandoned for nearly a century.
At the beginning of 20th century , Prince Croy, bought the Château de Paluel and the ruined Château de Commarque as well, to be used as a stone quarry to renovate Paluel.
The building remained in good condition until the end of the World War 2. It was set on fire in June 1944 by the SS Das Reich division returning from Oradour-sur-Glane. In ruins, it was never restored and the vegetation took over.
In 1968 , the castle was used as the setting for the filming of the film Le Tatoué by Denys de La Patellière, with Louis de Funès and Jean Gabin.
The castle was eventually purchased in 2017 by a local entrepreneur who started the restauration of the castle. It is shown here before the beginning of the works. The castle comes with its own POI.
-Château de Campagnac: The castle of Campagnac is an edifice built between the 14th, 16th and 19th centuries. It is located 4.7km northwest of Sarlat and has been the object of conflicts during the Hundred Years War and the wars of religion. The castle was purchased by the municipality in 1980 for 1.8 million francs. The mayor at the time, Louis Delmon wanted to make it a center dedicated to community life but the project never came to life. Since that time it has been abandoned, falling into ruins, with renovation costs nearing 2 million euros. The castle comes with its own POI.
All models were recreated manually from various photos and videos from the internet.
