The first documentary reference to this castle dates back to the year 848 and is of Muslim origin, when it served as a strategic surveillance point for an ancient road to La Mancha.
In the 11th century it became the property of Alfonso VI of León and Castile as part of the dowry of his wife Zaida and daughter of the Moorish king. Later, in December 1086, it was donated by Alfonso VI to the Cathedral of Santa María de Toledo, and was renovated in the 14th century by order of the archbishop of Toledo, Don Pedro Tenorio. It was then used as a prison for Don Alfonso Enríquez, count of Gijón and Noreña and bastard son of Enrique II of Castile, imprisoned by order of his brother Juan I of Castile.
In the 18th century it became part of the properties of the counts of Mora and in 1809 it served as a refuge for the troops of General Venegas in the fight against the French in the Battle of Almonacid, although in vain, since finally, the castle was conquered by French troops.
